The Hour Had Come: Luke 22:14-16
“14) When the hour had come, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15) And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16) for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”” Luke 22:14-16
These three verses give us a glimpse into the heart and mind of Jesus as He was seated around the table for the Passover meal with His disciples. He understood the significance of what was about to unfold, the disciples were still oblivious to what was happening.
He now expresses His heart; “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” The hour had come! There was no turning back. The Passover meal triggered the events that would culminate in the Lamb of God being sacrificed for the sins of humanity.
Verse 16 unpacks His understanding of what was about to happen. The typology and prophetic significance of the Passover Meal was about to be fulfilled; “for I say to you, I shall never again eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” His sacrifice was about to open the kingdom of God to lost humanity.
Immediately after His death on the cross, the veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. (Matthew 27:51) According to Hebrews 9, this signified the entrance into the Holy of Holies was opened by the sacrifice of Christ. Jesus became the doorway into the kingdom of God.
To the disciples gather for the meal, this was just another annual Passover. But Jesus understood the full significance of what was happening. Times and epochs were about to change. The Old was about to be fulfilled and the New was about to be ushered in.
The word “hour” is significant in the fulfillment of major prophetic events. The next big “hour” talked about in prophecy relates to the hour of His second return. (see Matthew 24:36; 44; 50; 25:13) We today are at the threshold of another significant prophetic “hour.”
