Jesus is Master Over Circumstances: Luke 22:7-13
“7) Then came the first day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8) And Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” 9) They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10) And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house that he enters. 11) And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12) And he will show you a large, furnished upper room; prepare it there.” 13) And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.” Luke 22:7-13
I love this story. It underlines the fact that things always happens just as Jesus says! Jesus is master over our circumstances.
We could ask many questions from this text. Did Jesus have foreknowledge? Were His words prophetic? Did Jesus cause these events to happen? Were all three involved?
No matter how you spin this story, it is miraculous! Every circumstance happed for Peter and John exactly as Jesus foretold.
Now the big question, does God still work this way today? Can the Holy Spirit speak to people and lead them in supernatural ways?
The book of Acts has numerous accounts of Divine intervention and leading. Walking in the Spirit involves listening to the inner voice of the Holy Spirit. Living by faith and not sight places the child of God in this category of the miraculous. Much of what God does is behind the scene and not noticed.
But let’s look at the other side of the coin. Jesus was also watching over the stoning of Stephen, the killing of the apostle James and the martyrdom of many early Christians. These are harder stories to wrestle with and not one of them was wasted.
I try to never put God in a box or limit Him. I have also learned that there is no easy answers to the “Why” questions in life. There are mysteries we cannot answer in this life.
But there is another aspect to this story. God works through others as well. The man carrying the pitcher of water and the home owner were also part of the story. I rest in the fact that Jesus is master over every circumstance in my life, even the difficult ones.
Paul amplified this in Philippians 1:12-14. He understood by faith that Jesus was Lord over His difficult circumstances for the miraculous spread of the gospel. Because of his imprisonment, we have much of the New Testament today!
God works way beyond our limited perspective. The ripple effect can spread around the world and through centuries of time.
