Ministering Healing and Deliverance: Luke 13:10-13
“10) And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11) And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12) When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13) And He laid His hands on her; and immediately she was made erect again and began glorifying God.” Luke‬ ‭13‬:‭10‬-‭13‬ ‭
Keep the time and location in mind. Jesus was teaching in the synagogues on the Sabbath. Being Jewish, He attended the closest synagogue on the Sabbath.
It happened on this occasion that a woman was present who was in bondage to a spirit of infirmity. For eighteen years her body was contorted and she was doubled over. She could not straighten up. This was more than being bent over, she was doubled over.
When Jesus saw her, He immediately took action. He called her over and set her free from her oppression and sickness.
Notice, it was caused by a demonic spirit, but Jesus called it a sickness. Demons can cause symptoms of infirmity. They might be behind all kinds of adverse health conditions. Even if the condition has a natural cause, unclean spirits seek to exploit the misery.
So how do you know if you should pray for healing from a physical condition or minister deliverance? Step out in faith and recognize that Jesus is both the healer and the deliverer! It doesn’t matter, He does both. He also heals injuries.
If you study texts like Matthew 10:7-8 and Mark 16:15-18, you discover Jesus gave His authority to His disciples and commanded them to do both healing and deliverance ministry. Many times these conditions are interwoven.
Here is the big take away from this text, Jesus stepped into action and ministered healing and deliverance to the woman. In this case, He went to her rather than her coming to Jesus. He took the initiative.
She had been in her condition for so long she had accepted it as her new normal. She accepted her condition as her plight in life. Jesus had the compassion and courage to intervene on her behalf.
Praying for healing and deliverance is so foreign to most churches that you are blackballed or called a fanatic if you even suggest laying hands on people and praying for them. That’s the real travesty of this story. They were in the synagogue but ministering to real needs of people was strictly prohibited.
If you are truly following Jesus, this kind of intervention should become a normal and natural part of your life. According to Mark, It is part of the Great Commission. It is what Jesus commands and empowers His disciples to do in His Name.
So what if you attempt ministering healing or deliverance and nothing happens? That’s ok because the results are on Jesus and the Holy Spirit and not on you! He is both the healer and deliverer.
Let me ask a parallel question, what if you share the gospel with several people and they don’t accept Christ? Does that mean God wants you to stop witnessing to people? By no means! Jesus is the Savior, we are merely His mouth piece.
At some point you need to step out in simple faith and start ministering to people in Jesus name. Obey and take action until it becomes natural and normal to minister to people.
