A Fresh, New and Deeper Walk With God: Psalm 40
“1) I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. 2) He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay, And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm. 3) He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord. 4) How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood. 5) Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done, And Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, They would be too numerous to count.” Psalms‬ ‭40‬:‭1‬-‭5‬
This Psalm ends a series of several Psalms where David was going through the pits of deep trials and struggles. He had been emotionally distraught.
The way the chapters are arranged, with Psalm 40, the storm clouds start rolling away and he has a glimmer of hope. Life can be that way even for the godly. He lifts us out of the miry clay and places our feet on solid ground.
But why do difficult times come? David says in this Psalm that it is to deepen our walk with God. It is to put a new song in our heart. It is to give us fresh insight into His wonders and goodness. It is to draw us closer to Himself. It is to break our dependency on mere ritual and formality of religion and lift us up to intimacy with Himself.
Our walk with God can get stuck in a rut. We can go through all the right motions, but leave God out. God wants something deeper. He doesn’t want our sacrifices, offerings or service; He wants us!
This might be where you are right now. God yearns for something deeper. He is inviting you into deeper relationship with Himself. Seek Him in new and fresh ways. Deepen your walk in the Spirit.
