The Morning That Changed Everything: Luke 24:1-3
“1) But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2) And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3) but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭24‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭
The women came early on the first day of the week ready to care for the dead body of Jesus, instead they found an empty tomb. They came with spices and perfume expecting to cover the stench of death, instead they encountered the aroma of life. They came mourning, they left singing. They came sorrowful, they left rejoicing.
When the four gospels are compared, the full impact of the scene comes into focus. They came expecting alert soldiers guarding the tomb, they found them strewed about unconscious. (Matthew 28:4) They came expecting a huge stone sealing the tomb, they found it already rolled away. They came early while it was still dark, they were met with the bright glow angelic brilliance.
God has a way of changing things. The reign of darkness was over. Jesus defeated death, the devil and darkness. A new domain had come. The kingdom of light began to reign.
That morning changed forever the order of things on earth. Satan is still active, but he is now a defeated foe. He still prowls about like a roaring lion, but when resisted firm in your faith he must flee.
These verses from Luke and the other gospel writers set the stage for a new era. All authority in heaven and earth had been handed over to Jesus. (See Matthew 28:18) The King stepped up began His reign.
Between His death and resurrection, Jesus had descended to the lower parts of the earth and accomplished several things. (Ephesians 4:8-10) Let me summarize.
He made a proclamation. He took the keys of death from the devil. He led captive a host of captives. He gave gifts to men. He ascended far above all the heavens. He prepared to fulfill all things. While His followers were keeping the Sabbath, He was very busy disarming the kingdom of darkness.
One more significant detail, He had numerous post resurrection appearances. During one of them, He taught at length about the kingdom of God and the promise of the Father to give the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:3-8) Shortly, Jesus was going to start building His Church.
Some refer to this new era as the church age. Jesus referred to it as the age of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Something very different was about to come. It all hinged on His death, burial and resurrection.
Those women who ventured to the tomb early on the first day of the week had no idea of what was about to shake the earth. They were the first to witness the power of the resurrection.
