Preparation Day: Luke 23:54-56
““54) It was the preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.” 55) Now the women who had come with Him out of Galilee followed, and saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56) Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.” Luke 23:54-56
Two things happen in this text. First, the women who had come with Jesus out of Galilee followed Joseph and Nicodemus to the grave where they laid Jesus. There was no sign of animosity between the two men and the women. The task of putting Jesus in the tomb was finished by the end of preparation day.
Second, the women kept the Sabbath. This is significant. Jesus was accused of stirring up the people against Moses and the Law, and yet His followers honored the Sabbath. They rested on the Sabbath and refrained from even going to the tomb.
We now have a time frame stretching from Thursday night to Sunday morning. I do not argue the time frame of the arrest, crucifixion and resurrection. What Jesus accomplished for us included keeping the Passover meal with His disciples.
Instead, I focus on the fact of His historical Redemptive work for us. He fulfilled everything written in the Law, the Psalms and the prophets. No detail was left undone.
Some try to force His time in the tomb to include three days and three nights. I lean toward the whole process had to take three days and three nights. Technically, the clock may have started ticking the moment Satan entered into Judas at the Passover meal. (John 13:22) That’s when the powers of hell and darkness began to prevail.
No matter, the four gospels are consistent in their account. An innocent man was crucified and placed in a tomb. He bore the brunt of the wrath of God for the sins of humanity on the cross and not in the tomb. We need to consider the whole scope of the death, burial and resurrection.
Preparation day was Friday. That’s when the work was done preparing for the Sabbath of rest. Jesus was crucified and placed in the tomb before preparation day ended.
