The Case Against Jesus: Luke 23:1-2
“1) Then the whole body of them got up and brought Him before Pilate. 2) And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.”” Luke‬ ‭23‬:‭1‬-‭2‬ ‭
The whole Sanhedrin accompanied Jesus for His trail before Pilate. The Jewish Council had the right to decide civil matters, but they could not carry out Capital punishment. They were ruled by the Romans.
They had three primary accusations against Jesus. First. They claimed He was misleading the Jewish nation and disturbing the peace. This was significant because Pilate was responsible to maintain peace and order.
Second, they charged that He refused to pay taxes to Caesar. That was an outright lie, but if true it meant He did not acknowledge Roman rule.
Third, they accused Him of claiming to be the Christ or a King. The way they presents the charge it sounded like He was activity promoting an insurrection against Rome. They claimed He was trying to stir up a revolt against Rome and set himself up as King over Palestine. That was the most grievous charge and would have called for Capital Punishment.
Undoubtedly, being escorted by Roman soldiers and the whole Jewish Council tainted the charges. The theatrical spin only added to the staged seriousness of the threat posed by Jesus.
It implied that Jesus intended to use the Passover celebration to mobilize His followers for a Coup to over through the government. The many visitors in Jerusalem from His native Galilee added credence to the false narrative.
The three charges were false. However, the case was presented as urgent enough to require immediate attention. They were fabricated charges, but extremely serious.
They basically backed Pilate into a corner. With them being the official Council of the Jews, Jesus stood alone against what Pilate saw as the political elite. Rome recognized them as the official leaders of the Jewish people.
This is the point at which human depravity, religious bias, and political power becomes dangerous. When the three form a blind alliance they can spin any story and promote corruption and injustice without human recourse.
They had a weak case, but huge leverage. The outcome was inevitable. Jesus was about to be condemned to be crucified.
