Trail Before the Sanhedrin: Luke 22:66-71
“66) When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, “67) If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68) and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69) But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70) And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” And He said to them, “Yes, I am.” 71) Then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”” Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭66‬-‭71‬ ‭
His first examination took place before what is called “the Sanhedrin.” This Council consisted of the chief priests, scribes, and elders of the people. They had gathered to examine Jesus for the purpose of trying to find a basis to condemn Him to death.
According to Matthew 26:57-62, they first tried getting witnesses to testify against Him. They contracted each other and twisted things He had said.
Finally in frustration, the chief priests and scribes questioned Him directly trying to get Him to commit blasphemy. They aimed their attack against His claim of being the Christ.
Every answer pointed toward His claim of being the Son of God. In their minds that amounted to Blasphemy. In Luke 22:70, He directly confirmed His identity as being the Son of God.
This brought the charge of Blasphemy. Jesus was not condemned for any crime or sin He had committed but solely for Who He claimed to be.
There was one major flaw in the reasoning of the Sanhedrin. Jesus had fulfilled every Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah. He was indeed God incarnate. (See John 1:14-18)
The Gospel of John was written to establish the Deity of Christ. He was indeed the Messiah, the Christ, the Son of God, or God incarnate. He was exactly Who He calmed to be and His works, His preaching and His many signs and wonders validated His claim.
The Sanhedrin was suffering from willful blindness. They set out to establish guilt and not innocence. There was zero search for truth or biblical support to substantiate His claim of being the Son of God.
The scribes were seated among them and yet not once did they consult the many prophetic texts about the coming Messiah found throughout the whole Old Testament. They were blind guides of the blind.
They missed one huge possibility: He was indeed exactly WHO He claimed to be! Jesus Christ came as God incarnate. He was the promised Messiah.
There is a huge lesson in this story. Don’t believe what religious leaders say without diligently searching the Bible for yourself. Scholars, theologians, philosophers, psychologists, medical doctors and many scientists equally suffer from bias.
Religious bias is what led to the crucifixion of Jesus. Bias no matter the root, bias is equally blinding. Be honest enough to search the Scriptures for truth. In so doing, Jesus will most likely become your Savior and Lord.
