The Breakthrough: Luke 22:39-53
“47) While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was preceding them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48) But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49) When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50) And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51) But Jesus answered and said, “Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52) Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? 53) While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”” Luke 22:47-53
Before digging deeply into the story of His arrest, i want to stress a point; when He got up the final time from prayer, the inner battles were over. The Good Shepherd was now ready to voluntarily lay His life down for His sheep. There was no resistance on His behalf. There was no battle from Him because the inner battles had been won in prayer.
This point is exemplified strongly in this context. Though His disciples were ready to fight, He had arrived at peace and tranquility.
I cannot emphasize this point strongly enough. During the time in the Garden He moved from inner turmoil and anxiety to perfect peace with what He was about to face. The same can happen for you and me.
I maintain the big battles in life need to be fought inwardly through the spirit and not outwardly by the arm of flesh. This story screams this lesson.
Looking back, my greatest failures in life have come from those occasions that I allowed the emotions of fear, anger, lust or greed to sit on the throne and determine my course of action. Many have been the hurts, verbal wounds, conflicts and regrets that come from these times.
Jesus settled the inner battle through prayer. We do not fight against flesh and blood. Peace and tranquility are gained through prayer. The footwear of the soldier is the gospel of peace. (Ephesians 6:15) Peace in an inward condition of the heart.
What is your inner battle? Do not face it on your own. Follow the example of Jesus, retreat to the prayer room and fight in the spirit until you have a breakthrough!
