The Importance of Preserving Seeds and Educating the Next Generations

Devotional written by Rubén Hernandez

I’d like to share a reflection that begins in our organic garden and reaches into the heart of our educational mission here in Guatemala. In our garden, every fruit we grow is not just to provide nourishment. They also carry within themselves a promise for the future: seeds. With God’s help and dedication, we collect and preserve these seeds because they have learned to thrive in our soil, to adapt to its conditions, and to give life again and again. They are resilient seeds, just like we hope our children will be.

Recently, we had an experience that beautifully illustrates this connection. During an activity with our students, some of the children received small papaya plants, lovingly grown from seeds we had saved. Seeing their faces light up as they held those trays full of life was a powerful reminder: just as we care for the seeds, we must also nurture our children from an early age.

At our school, we believe that to educate is to plant. Every child who learns, who feels valued, who explores the world with curiosity, is like a seed well sown. If we give them the right soil—values, knowledge, love—they will grow strong, bear fruit, and be ready to transform their world.

Saving seeds is an act of hope. So is educating children. May we never stop planting goodness, both in the earth and in the hearts of our students or others around us.

With gratitude and commitment,

 Rubén
