The Tragic Fall of Judas: Luke 22:21-23
“21) But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table. 22) For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23) And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this thing.” Luke 22:21-23
This is an amazing text. Judas was already straying, yet he tried to fool Jesus and the other disciples. Jesus saw right through him.
Let’s take a moment and wrestle with the question of what led to the fall of Judas? His story is not unique, many people fall prey to Satan’s schemes.
First, He may have become angry and bitter at Jesus over his public rebuke as recorded in John 12:2-8. Judas had scorned Mary for her anointing the feet of Jesus. His false but pious reason was the waste of expensive perfume. Jesus publicly exposed his false motive and reasoning.
Second, from the same text, we discover Judas was already stealing from the money bag. His love for money choked out his love for Jesus. He had a new master.
Third, his deception and anger had opened a door for demonic influence. (Read Ephesians 4:26-27) His story is a very sober warning of the consequence of living anger and bitterness in our lives.
Fourth, I believe he underestimated the hatred, jealousy and animosity of the religious leaders against Jesus. He had no idea of the depth of their violence and evil. He was genuinely shocked when Jesus was condemned to be crucified. Beware of your relationships, you can be exploited for evil.
Finally, he is an example of how Satan uses guilt and condemnation to drive people to self destruction. (Matthew 27:1-10) Satan always turns on those who unwittingly serve him. (John 10:10)
I have seen many destroyed by the Judas syndrome. Satan blinds them to the possibility of forgiveness and restoration from Jesus. Suicide is always the outcome of a devastating inner war.
If you are embroiled in the inner war, I beg you to actively rebuke and resist Satan, and turn to Jesus. Don’t isolate yourself, reach out for help!
