Picture of the Last Week in the Life of Jesus: Luke 21:27-28
“37) Now during the day He was teaching in the temple, but at evening He would go out and spend the night on the mount that is called Olivet. 38) And all the people would get up early in the morning to come to Him in the temple to listen to Him.” Luke 21:37-38
According to these verses, Jesus spent His final week in Jerusalem with the same routine. He taught in the temple by day and then every evening He with His disciples ascended the Mount of Olives. This clear explanation of the last week of the life of Jesus was recorded only by Luke. These are helpful verses.
They help explain several crucial details about His arrest and trial by night. For example, this explains how Judas knew where to look for Jesus after going to the chief priests and getting the soldiers. Jesus had established a daily pattern.
Second, It also sheds light on why the disciples fell asleep so easily during His passion prayer. This was their lodging during His final week. It had become their home away from home.
Third, His pattern of teaching in the temple by day and retreating to the mount of Olives by night is how He maintained His vigor. People and ministry can wear you out. The greater the ministry to people the deeper the need for prayer and solitude with God.
Fourth, this pattern also explains why the servant girls recognized Peter as “having been with Jesus.” (Matthew 26:69-75) This became a set daily routine during His final week. They were always together and moving about openly. The people were waiting for them early every morning.
Fifth, this pattern was so consistent that it became part of His defense before the chief priests and elders after His arrest. (see Matthew 26:55-56) He had spent every day in the temple teaching the people and they had left Him alone. Why the need for a covert operation under the guise of darkness?
Finally, this speaks volumes about the need for a daily routine that includes spending time with God and ministering to people. Establishing daily time alone with God, in His Word and in prayer is possibly the most important discipline of the Christian life. It is the most common hallmark of every effective Christian leaders.
