Signs of His Return: Luke 21:7-9
“7) They questioned Him, saying, “Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8) And He said, “See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not go after them. 9) When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end does not follow immediately.”” Luke‬ ‭21‬:‭7‬-‭9‬ ‭
The disciples seized the moment to ask about coming signs of His return. He did not back down. He went on to give a survey of coming events.
Keep in mind, this conversation happened nearly 2,000 years ago. What He was about to say spanned that entire stretch of world history.
Two things stand out in these opening verses. First, many false teachers would come in His name and seek to mislead many. There would be many new world religions and numerous religious leaders.
That has certainly happened, including the birth and rise of Islam. Many new religious sects have started in just the past 150 years. In fact, there have been and are so many springing up, it is impossible to name them all.
Second, there would be many wars and disturbances. It would take a long time to count the number of wars and conflicts over the past 2,000 years. There have been many and some have been very serious. War seems to be a condition of human depravity.
I stress the longevity of 2,000 years of human history, because many Christian’s read these verses with a micro view of the “now.” These characteristics have been true of a very long span of history.
From the perspective of the disciples, they were looking for these signs immediately. So far, these two signs matched events in their days, including the invasion by Rome in AD 70, intense persecution and the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem. They were convinced they were in the end times.
There were numerous times in human history over the past 2,000 years that lined up with most of the signs Jesus described.
As Jesus continues, He gets more specific about signs that would accompany His return. Based on this chapter and Matthew 24-25, we have reason to be very alert in our days.
Stay tuned as we dig deeper into this very interesting subject.
