Giving as an Expression of Worship: Luke 21:1-4
“1) And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury. 2) And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins. 3) And He said, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them; 4) for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on.”” Luke 21:1-4
Jesus and His disciples were sitting in the temple near the treasury box. Putting money into the treasury had become a show and a status symbol.
The rich would make a public show of their giving. People were watching and so were the religious leaders. The rich wanted acclaim from men.
Suddenly a poor widow stepped in line and gave two small copper coins. Her gift amounted to nearly nothing. Nobody noticed, but Jesus was watching.
Keep in mind, giving is a form of worship. It is a way of attributing value to God. She was saying, “God, you mean more to me than all my earthly treasures.” She was making a huge statement of worship, but it went unnoticed.
Meanwhile, the gifts from the rich looked good, but they were a tiny fraction of their wealth and equity. They were merely throwing tokens and scraps to God.
True worship is not about money, but it does involve sacrifice. She sacrificed everything to God, their giving had nothing to do with sacrifice. She was trusting God as her Provider, they saw themselves as providing for God.
Without anyone knowing it, Jesus was watching. Worship is not about your money, it’s about your heart! They were dressed in beautiful clothing, she was adorned with a beautiful heart. They loved and worshipped themselves, she loved and worshipped God more than all of them combined.
Never despise the poor, orphans or widows. Many of them have extraordinary faith and love for God.
