Jesus Makes a Claim to Deity: Luke 20:41-44
“41) Then He said to them, “How is it that they say the Christ is David’s son? 42) For David himself says in the book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, 43) Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ 44) Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord,’ and how is He his son?”” Luke‬ ‭20‬:‭41‬-‭44‬ ‭
At the end of this tense exchange with the full range of Jewish religious leaders, Jesus quoted King David in such a way as to assert his prophetic Deity.
The quote is from Psalm 110:1. The whole Psalm asserts the Deity of the Messiah. This Psalm was quoted again in Hebrews 1:13 and 10:13 to assert the Deity of Christ.
Make no mistake, Jesus was making the claim of being both the Messiah and Deity at the end of this exchange. It was this claim that led to His ultimate crucifixion. Jesus was crucified not for any crime He committed, but solely for who He claimed to be!
So how does the resurrection fit into this equation? According to Romans 1:4, He was declared to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead. The resurrection proved His claim of Deity.
The challenge is now in your court. You need to research the ministry and claims of Jesus Christ and answer the question of His true identity. But that is merely the beginning of your journey.
Once you come to faith in Jesus Christ, the rest of your life will be spent discovering the full mystery of His identity and the riches of your inheritance in Him. Take time and seriously study Scriptures like Ephesians 1:16-23 and 3:14-21.
As you begin to grasp the fullness of your position, authority and dominion “in Christ”, then you will begin to walk in newness of life and the power of the Holy Spirit. The dynamics of the book of Acts and the early church will begin to manifest in your life. You will begin to enter into the full blessings of what it means to be a child of God.
The true identity of Jesus Christ is far more than a theological position. When it sinks in and you begin to embrace the fulness of Christ, it will become your access to the keys for true kingdom living. It will usher you from naturalism into Supernaturalism. You will begin to live and function on a totally new level of faith.
