Winning the Battle of Public Discourse: Luke 20:39-40
“39! Some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40) For they did not have courage to question Him any longer about anything.” Luke‬ ‭20‬:‭39‬-‭40‬
These two verses concede an important point; Jesus was winning battle of public discourse. He disarmed every verbal trap thrown at Him. He won every debate. He exposed every evil plot and motive of the religious leaders. He was winning over the people.
The religious leaders could not match His miracles, signs or wonders. They had no power over demons. They were not healing or setting people free from sickness, injury or diseases. They had no compassion for the people.
The religious leaders recognized they had a problem, multitudes were following Jesus and His gospel of the Kingdom of God. The people were becoming disillusioned with institutionalized religion. They were true life in God but were falling away from dead religion.
Jesus pointed the people to faith in God and His power and promises throughout the Old Testament. He was sparking a revival. People were discovering true faith and fellowship with God. A movement was starting.
The religious leaders were desperate and their tactics were about to change. They were ready to abandoned public discourse and move instead to crucifixion and destruction.
Unknowingly, they were about to fulfill prophecy. (See John 10:47-53) They were about to sacrifice the Lamb of God for the sins of the world.
