Religious Retaliation: Luke 20:19-20
“19) The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them. 20) So they watched Him, and sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch Him in some statement, so that they could deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.” Luke 20:19-20
The parable of the vine growers enrages the scribes, chief priests and elders of the people. (Luke 20:9-18) They understood that He spoke the parable against them. Their malice was beening exposed.
They wanted to seize and destroy Him at that very moment, but there were two problems. First, they feared the people. The people were siding with Jesus. God was working through Him. His words brought life and Hope. He was the servant of the people.
But second, the prophetic timing was wrong. The Lamb of God had to die on the Passover. God was in control and watching over the fulfillment of His Word.
Yet this parable set everything in motion. From that moment the religious leaders sent spies and worked in earnest to destroy Jesus.
These two verses help take the mask off from religion. When exposed, man made religion is saturated with human depravity. It might look good from the outside and even feel good, but it fails to change the heart of man.
Jesus came preaching and offering something very different. His gospel of the kingdom saved lost people. He restored the broken, healed the sick and set captives free.
But His gospel was missing one important point, the Lamb of God had to go to the cross as an offering for human sin. Human redemption was costly.
The promise of the Helper would follow His departure. (See John 14:16-18; John 16:7) Jesus promised and was working toward something totally different. He wasn’t offering a new religion, He was opening the door for a radically new human relationship with God.
Though the religious leaders intended evil against Jesus, they were about to fulfill the prophetic plan. It intrigues me that the scribes were among them, but they were blind to the many prophesies of the Messiah.
