Strong Warning: Luke 13:25-30
“25) Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ 26) Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets’; 27) and He will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you are from; depart from Me, all you evildoers.’ 28) In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out. 29) And they will come from east and west and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God. 30) And behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.”” Luke 13:25-30
This teaching emphasizes three main points about life after death. Jesus emphasized these three points again later in Luke 16:19-31 with the story of the rich man and Lazarus. Let’s look at them briefly.
First there will be conscious existence after death for both the saved and the unsaved. Jesus never taught the concept of annihilation. He emphasized eternal conscious existence for both the saved and the unsaved because the human soul and spirit are eternal.
Second, eternal destiny is sealed at the moment of physical death. There will be no second chance to get into the Kingdom of God after death. Death closes the door permanently!
Third, the unsaved will experience eternal remorse, regret, suffering and wrath. They will know what they missed and will forever be separated from God’s glory and presence. Instead they will be judged and cast into the Lake of fire prepared for the devil and his angels. (See Revelation 20:10-15)
Some might call this “hell fire and brimstone” teaching. But Jesus taught this way as “full disclosure” and “fair warning” to all people. He called people to the repentance and belief that leads to forgiveness and salvation so they could avoid this eternal catastrophe! By teaching this way, He removed all excuses.
In love, Jesus came and died on the cross as full payment for human sin. Read John 3:16-21 for the whole story!
God does not want any to perish, but for all to come to repentance, faith and salvation. Take a moment and compare 1 Timothy 2:3-7 and 2 Peter 3:8-9. The lost cannot blame God their eternal plight!
