God’s Love and Justice
“6) Are not five sparrows sold for two cents? Yet not one of them is forgotten before God. 7) Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7
God is omniscient. He knows everything and He cares. He knows both the big things and the small things in our lives.
He cares about the sparrows of the field and He counts the hairs on our head. Nothing escapes His notice.
But most important, you and I have value in His sight. He loves people. This love for humanity motivated His to send His Son to reach lost and sinful people. (See John 3:16-17)
He is both loving and just. He made provision for human salvation and one day He will sit as judge. According to the previous two verses, He will sentence wicked, sinful and unrepentant people to hell. He is to be feared.
But that is not His desire for anyone. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.”
We can now appreciate the comparison between Luke 12:4-5 and 6-7. They are two sides of the coin of Gods holy nature. On one side is God’s justice, on the other side is God’s love.
The bottom line is that God loves and cared for people. All people have value in His sight. But He will not force anyone to believe in Him or obey Him. He honors human free will.
Just like He notices when a sparrow falls to the ground, He noticed when any human dies in a state of rejection and rebellion. It grieves Him, yet Justice compels Him to pronounce eternal sentence.
This comparison captures the tension in these four verses. (Luke 12:4-7) The bottom line is that Jesus knows the details of your life and He cares for you. He has done everything to provide for your forgiveness and salvation, but will not force you to yield to Him.
The next two verse explain the condition for salvation. People need to confess Him. They need to place faith in Him.
Why would anyone choose to stand before Him as judge when they can confess and embrace Him as Savior? Why invoke His hand of God’s Justice when you can invite His hand of God’s love?
