From Barb Meister – March 5, 2022, an EF4 tornado ripped through Carver Road in Madison County by Winterset, Iowa, leaving a trail of demolished homes and lives. The GoServ Global Domestic Team was able to deploy to the area and spent almost a month tearing down homes and cleaning up property with the help of 250 volunteers. Most of the affected have been able to rebuild or relocate. Now meet Ryan and Mandy Gainuss. Their hundred-year-old home withstood the tornado, but it was damaged beyond repair. After two years of fighting with their insurance company, they find themselves living in a 14 x 32 shed on their property without the financial means to rebuild or repair. They have no running water, using a camp outside and a porta potty. They heat the shed with a small woodstove and the floors freeze when it gets severely, Iowa winter cold. Mandy reached out several weeks ago asking if I had any ideas. Long story short, we now have plans for a small two-bedroom house. The old house has been removed, and we are moving ahead to build this couple a home, but we need help. The majority of this home needs to be built by donations, and that’s where you come in. We have secured local trades people to do most of the work but again we need your help. We have set up an account at the Gainuss’ church in Waukee for donations, and a T-shirt sale has been started through Jones Creek Apparel in Winterset. Several other fundraisers are currently being planned. This is a big undertaking, we know, but this is a big deal. Would you please consider helping us build a house for this couple? If you are able to donate build supplies of any kind or volunteer time, please reach out via phone or email. Already a furnace and air conditioner have been donated and companies are offering discounts and supplies. We are needing $150,000 to make this happen. It looks huge, I know, but again it isn’t huge if we all help.
