A Brief (short) Brief (detailed explanation)? Hebrews 12:22
“22) But I urge you, brethren, bear with this word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly.” Hebrews 13:22
This verse causes me to chuckle. We have just labored through one of the longest and most complex books in the New Testament. It is filled with mind boggling observations and profound insights. The author walked us through Creation and a detailed study of Christology. He then led us on a tour of the entire Old Covenant and explained the complexity of the priesthood and sacrificial system. Then He included a brief biography of many Old Testament saints.
Then he had the audacity to say; “I have written to you briefly.” Bingo! We now proof that the author was a preacher that timed his sermons by a sun dial… at night. This is sure evidence that Paul was the author of the book of Hebrews. (See Acts 20:7-12)
But with all seriousness, the content covered in the book of Hebrews is a condensed master piece. It is not for the casual reader. It is strong on exhortation. He was encouraging suffering Christians to remain faithful. Every word was weighed carefully and included thoughtfully.
It ties the Old and New Covenants together with a stroke of Genius. It is an example of Divine Inspiration. God is the indisputable Author behind the book of Hebrews.
