Looking for Something Better: Hebrews 11:39-40
“39) And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40) because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.” Hebrews 11:39-40
The ultimate destination of faith is the resurrection and eternal life spoken about in 1 Corinthians 15:42-58. It is still a future event.
When it happens, both the Old and New Testament believers will be resurrected at the same time. They gained approval by their faith, but the ultimate fulfillment of the promise is still to come.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 also talks about this event. It will accompany the return of Christ for His church.
Faith includes delayed gratification. It sets its sight on Jesus Christ and eternity. It looks forward to something much better than this world has to offer. Faith embraces the promises of God related to eternity.
