Jesus is my All in All. Hebrews 7:17
“For it is attested of Him, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”” Hebrews 7:17
I want to take a moment and touch on an important change that took place with the change of priestly order from Melchizedek to Aaron. From the first mention of Melchizedek in the Bible, he held at least two offices. Notice from Genesis 14:18 that he was both “king of Salem” and “priest of God Most High.” We can ascertain from the context he was also a prophet.
But when the priesthood was handed over to men and the descendants of Aaron, something interesting took place. Moses set up the priesthood. Later, Samual the prophet also set up a king over Israel. At that point, there was a very distinct division of power and authority in Israel. Because of human depravity, there was a need for checks and balances. Therefore the Old Testament had the threefold offices of Prophet, Priest and King. They were to hold each other accountable.
This system was so unique that it became the inspiration of our founding fathers in the United States setting in up our three branches of government. We have the Judicial, the Legislative and the Executive branches of government. Moving away from the monarchy, they saw a need for checks and balances in government. They adopted the Old Testament model.
But, now lets move back to Hebrews 7:17. If what the author says in true and the priestly order of Aaron was again replaced with the order of Melchizedek, another big change took place. Jesus Christ stepped into the three offices of Melchizedek again. He became Prophet, Priest and King. There is no longer a need for division of powers or checks and balances because He is morally pure, righteous and just. He is the prefect benevolent ruler.
As we look ahead to the earthy rule of Jesus Christ talked about in Revelation 19 and 20, the form of Government will be a theocracy. Jesus will occupy all three offices. Why? Because “He is a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” He is Prophet, Priest and King.
This may sound trivial, but at my age and life experience this is absolutely profound. I look to Jesus as my Prophet, Priest and King. That’s what brings me comfort, peace and hope in these troubling times. He is my source of truth, salvation and authority. Jesus Christ is my all in all.
