Paid In Full: Hebrews 1:3d
“3)… When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” Hebrews 1:3
Jesus came with a mission in mind. He came to pay for the sins of humanity. He was born in the manger with the cross in mind. Though He healed many who were sick, fed the hungry and set captives free, His single minded mission was human redemption.
Hebrews 1:3 ends with the declaration of “Mission Accomplished!” I love the way the verse reads; “… when He had made purification for sin, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”
Much more was happening on that Old Rugged Cross than meets the eye. Jesus was atoning for the sins of humanity. The final words of Jesus from the cross as recorded in John 19:30 were simply; “It is finished!” It can be translated “Paid in Full!”
Following His resurrection and ascension, His task was complete. “He sat down.” There is nothing more to be added to His sacrifice. It was complete! It was accepted by the Father.
There is nothing lacking that needs to be added to human atonement. As Ephesians 1:13-14 so clearly teaches, after listening to the gospel, our response is to believe. We do not work to earn our salvation. Jesus purchased it for us.
This does not mean Jesus Christ is currently unemployed. Hebrews 7:25 teaches that He now fills a huge intercession role for believers. He fills a priestly role. Romans 8:26-30 adds depth and insight to this role. He is seated next to the Father to intercede on our behalf.
With His Redemptive mission complete, the mission of the church began. According to Matthew 28:18-20, He charged His followers to carry the gospel message to the ends of the earth.
Let me clarify, our calling and mission as believers is not complete until Jesus returns. The church has a crucial role to fill in the world!
