The Holy Spirit as the Author of Scripture:
“10) As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11) seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12) It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.” 1 Peter 1:10-12
“20) But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21) for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” 2 Peter 1:20-21
One of the primary ministries of the Holy Spirit related to the giving of the inspired Word of God. Peter visited this theme in both of his Epistles.
When it came to Old Testament prophesies about the coming of the Messiah, the suffering of Christ and the gospel; the prophets themselves viewed it as a mystery. (1 Peter 1:10-12) Yet, they remained faithful to record the inspired word from the Holy Spirit.
They were moved by the Holy Spirit. The picture is that of a sail of a ship filled with wind and moving the vessel. The Holy Spirit is credited as the author of Scripture. It was not mere human authors writing their own thoughts or speculations. The Bible was “God Breathed.” That’s why it speaks with absolute unity and harmony on every subject even though it was compiled over thousands of years.
The end result was the Inspired Word of God without error in the original autographs. We have a vast number of old manuscripts for both the Old and New Testaments. Our modern text is based on the most trusted and sound documents of ancient history.
However, there is no doctrine of inspired translation. To be accurate, biblical translators need to go back to the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts. I use a trusted translation, but I constantly go back to the original languages in my word studies of a given passage.
The big task today is translating the Bible into nearly every language. That has been a long process with many dedicated workers. Tribal languages have been the biggest challenge. Thanks to groups like Wycliffe Bible Translators, that task is nearing completion.
Sufficient for this post is the understanding that the Holy Spirit is both the author and preserver of Scripture. It is a fascinating science of study all of its own called “Bibliology.” I praise God for the many linguists and scholars who have devoted their lives to the preservation and translation of the Word of God.
My calling is to preach the solid and unadulterated gospel through the power of the Holy Spirit in many places around the world. (1 Peter 1:12) This calling consumes me. I absolutely trust the Bible and preach the gospel as the most important message God has given to mankind!
I embrace the charge of Paul in 2 Timothy 3:16-4:8. I have dedicated my life to preach and teach the Word of God. I seek to be faithful and work hard at my calling as an evangelist to clearly present the gospel message.
