The Omnipresence of God: Psalm 139:7-12
“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.” Psalms‬ ‭139‬:‭7‬-‭12‬ ‭
We now step into the second part of Psalm 139. In these verses David is wrestling with the omnipresence of God. Because He is Spirit, He is everyplace at the same time. We cannot escape Gods presence.
This was a profound revelation for David. Moses built the tabernacle in the wilderness so Gods presence could go with Israel. Later, David wanted to build the temple as a house for God.
But in this text he realizes that God is everywhere. It is impossible to run and hide from Him. This was a refreshing concept for David because he was constantly on the move.
This is good news for every believer. God is with us everywhere and all times. He is omnipresent.
But in the New Testament, the Holy Spirit also indwells every believer. Our body becomes a temple of the Holy Spirit. (See 3:16-17 and 6:19-20) I call this the “In Me Presence of God.”
There is no place we can flee from His presence. That also means we can grieve the Holy Spirit by dragging Him into our sin. What a terrifying thought!
This thought alone causes me to shudder when tempted. It has become a huge personal deterrence from living in sin.
