History is “His Story!” Psalm 105
“1) Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples. 2) Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonders. 3) Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. Seek the Lord and His strength; 4) Seek His face continually. 5) Remember His wonders which He has done, His marvels and the judgments uttered by His mouth, 6) O seed of Abraham, His servant, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!
13) And they wandered about from nation to nation, From one kingdom to another people. 14) He permitted no man to oppress them, And He reproved kings for their sakes: “15) Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm.”
17) He sent a man before them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave. 18) They afflicted his feet with fetters, He himself was laid in irons; “19) Until the time that his word came to pass, The word of the Lord tested him. 20) The king sent and released him, The ruler of peoples, and set him free.”
26) He sent Moses His servant, And Aaron, whom He had chosen. 27) They performed His wondrous acts among them, And miracles in the land of Ham.
38) Egypt was glad when they departed, For the dread of them had fallen upon them. 39) He spread a cloud for a covering, And fire to illumine by night.” ‭‭ Psalms‬ ‭105‬:‭1‬-‭6‬, ‭13‬-‭15‬, ‭17‬-‭29, 26‬-‭27‬, ‭38‬-‭39‬
Psalm 105 scans the history of Israel from Gods covenant with Abraham to the Exodus from Egypt and the conquest of the promised land. Altogether it spans over 500 years.
It establishes the fact that God keeps His word and His promises. Throughout history, He has moved in miraculous ways to protect and provide for Israel when they walked with Him and kept His ways.
This Psalm is a spring board to establish the faithfulness of God. Throughout this entire time He worked in miraculous ways on behalf of His people. He utterly humiliated the gods of the surrounding nations.
Though this Psalm ends abruptly with the miraculous conquest of the Promised Land. It is easy for the modern reader to extend the theme through the ages. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. He does not change. He has not grown tired or worn out.
This same Psalm could be composed for New Testament history. The same theme applies today. This Psalm was written as a template for the immutability of God.
God keeps His word and works in miraculous ways on behalf of His people! He is Savior, Protector, Provider, Guide, Shepherd, Healer, Promise Keeper and Way Maker! We could add many more to this list.
History is “His Story!” He has been present and active throughout history. History declares He has no rival or equal. He is worthy of wonder, praise, adoration, worship and our full devotion.
But you ask; “How then do you explain His discipline and judgement on His people in the Old Testament?” That’s a great question. It is dealt with in the next Psalm. The goodness, faithfulness and loving kindness of God are not to become an excuse for sin or rebellion.
