The Old Testament Great Commission: Psalm 67
“1) God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us— Selah. 2) That Your way may be known on the earth, Your salvation among all nations. 3) Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 4) Let the nations be glad and sing for joy; For You will judge the peoples with uprightness And guide the nations on the earth. Selah. 5) Let the peoples praise You, O God; Let all the peoples praise You. 6) The earth has yielded its produce; God, our God, blesses us. 7) God blesses us, That all the ends of the earth may fear Him.” Psalms 67:1-7
This Psalm goes way beyond a narrow focus on Israel and the Jewish people. This is a call for every nation to acknowledge and worship God.
It takes time for this Psalm in the heart of the Old Testament to sink in. God has always a a plan for all of humanity. God so loved the world, He gave His only Son to die for the sins of all humanity. (John 3:16-17; 1 John 2:2)
Every nation, tribe and tongue will be represented in heaven. The Great commission is to carry the gospel even to the remotest parts of the earth. (Acts 1:8)
This Psalm shatters the box of a Jewish only view of God. They were God’s chosen people to carry the promise of the birth of the Messiah to fulfillment. They were in a special covenant relationship with God. He will fulfill every promise made in the Old Testament to His people.
But God has always had His eyes on all people and every nation. Jesus died for all of humanity. He is the only way to God. (Acts 4:12)
This Psalm screams the truth that God has always a plan for all people and every nation. This Psalm is a lighting rod in the center of the Old Testament. It is the Old Testament equivalent to the Great Commission.
