Beware of Doeg The Edomite: Psalm 52
“1) Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The lovingkindness of God endures all day long. 2) Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit. 3) You love evil more than good, Falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah. 4) You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.” Psalms‬ ‭52‬:‭1‬-‭4‬
This psalm was supposedly written following the events in 1 Samuel 22. When David fled from Saul, he stopped at the house of Abimelech the priest for prayer and supplies. He also took the sword of Goliath. David was fleeing for his life.
An evil man named Doeg the Edomite saw David and reported it to King Saul. That brought the wrath of Saul against the whole house of Abimelech the priest.
When Abimelech was summoned before the king, he was totally innocent, but Saul condemned his whole family to death.
Not one soldier dared raise his sword against the priests. Without hesitation, it was Doeg the Edomite that turned and killed Abimelech and his entire family.
Let’s put the atrocity in perspective. Eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod were slaughtered that day by the hand of Doeg the Edomite. This number does not include potential women and children who also died in this slaughter. Abiathar alone, the son of Abimelech escaped and reported to David.
It was against this backdrop that David wrote Psalm 52. David blamed himself for the death of the whole family and priestly line of Abimelech. David suspected on the day he saw Doeg the Edomite at the house of Abimelech that he was a wicked man, but he underestimated the potential for evil within him.
This Psalm and the events of 1 Samuel 22 expose the fact that there are evil and wicked people in the world. Much human suffering and terrible atrocities have been committed by the hands of men and women like Doeg the Edomite throughout human history.
For the sake of personal gain and promotion, there is no end to the depth of evil these wicked people can perpetrate against the innocent. This is especially true when they form alliance with other wicked people. King Saul and Doeg the Edomite became friends that day.
I need stories and Psalms like this to remind me that the kingdom of darkness is very prevalent in this present evil age. Doeg the Edomite is alive and well in these modern times. There are wicked people who have no fear of God or love for people. There is no depth to the evil, hurt, pain and suffering they can perpetrate against innocent people.
