Consider the Lillies: Luke 12:27-28
“27) Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 28) But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!” Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭27‬-‭28‬ ‭. Jesus now shifts the illustration from the birds of the sky to the flowers of the field. He moves from food to clothing.
Imagine taking a long hike across the country from spring time, through the summer and into the early fall. Over several weeks, you traverse plains, rolling hills, bluffs and into remote mountain valleys.
With each new day, you are welcomed by an endless display of colors from the wild vegetation. You are stunned by the variety of flowers and grasses. There is every shape, size and color you can imagine.
But why? What purpose does texture, color and beauty fulfill? If evolution is true, how do you explain the breath taking scenery?
The answer is “God.” He dresses the flowers of the field and paints the landscape. Jesus observed that even Solomon in all of his glory did not cloth himself with such beauty.
Yet, as fall gives way to winter, the flowers all die and the grasses withers. Why? It seems like such a waste. The answer is; “so He can dress it a new the next spring!” He’s been changing the scenery every year for centuries. Many times, He changes it throughout the day.
Jesus then makes the point that God wants to cloth us as well. He cares for us much more than flowers and grasses. He wants to dress us in beauty.
The problem is that people can mess up what God created. He has provided everything for our fitness, health, beauty and attire as we seek Him and follow His ways.
We need to trust Him, accept His design and trust Him to provide. You are worth more to Him than plants and flowers. People were created in His image.
But there’s a problem.
Sin and human depravity have messed up the human portrait. Think about it, plants know nothing about greed, violence, exploitation, poverty or war. They don’t mess with self identity. Flowers are content being flowers.
The only solution is to return to God and His ways. He makes all things beautiful. Seek Him and trust Him! The beauty transformation starts inside the human heart. It moves from the inside to the outside as we align with God.
