The Plight of Israel’s Enemies: Psalm 129
“1) Many times they have persecuted me from my youth up,” Let Israel now say, “2) Many times they have persecuted me from my youth up; Yet they have not prevailed against me. 3) The plowers plowed upon my back; They lengthened their furrows.” 4) The Lord is righteous; He has cut in two the cords of the wicked. 5) May all who hate Zion Be put to shame and turned backward;” Psalms‬ ‭129‬:‭1‬-‭5‬
This Psalm captures the common story of Israel’s adversaries. Many have plotted against Israel, but have been frustrated and turned back. Why? God’s protection and blessing has been on His chosen people.
The exception to this principle came during times of Israel’s rebellion. During those times God raised up adversaries as a rod of discipline.
Hebrews 12:4-13 reminds us that God deals the same way with us. He loves us to the point of disciplining us as a son in whom a father delights. His goal is that we might’ve share His holiness.
