Focus on the Family: Psalm 127
“1) Unless the Lord builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain. 2) It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep. 3) Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. 4) Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. 5) How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate.” Psalms 127:1-5
God has His eye on families and even on cities that are dedicated to Him. He takes care of His own. If His blessings and protection are absent, there’s not much we can do to defend ourselves.
When your heart is stayed on God, He surrounds your life with good. There is no need to stay up late or rise up early from fear, stress or anxiety. Jesus wants your sleep to be a blessing. His Spirit can heal, comfort, teach and bless you while you sleep.
It is also true that God loves children. They are His reward. The Psalmist compared children to arrows in a warriors quiver.
For years I was an avid bow hunter. My wife would count the arrows in my hunters quiver and say; “we need more children to match your hunting quiver.” God blessed us with nine. My wife absolutely loves children!
I confess, when they were young it was a handful. Now it is a shear delight watching God shoot them all around the world for His glory. They all love the Lord and are serving Him in various capacities. They mean more to us than life itself.
Now our prayers also include the next generation. At the time of this writing, we have thirty grandchildren. That means our prayer list is much longer than most. We are asking God to shoot them also around the world for His glory.
This short Psalm and small testimony captures the potential of a godly legacy. We can also look back the other direction and see the same blessings passed on to us.
This Psalm screams of the importance of family. Never take this calling in life for granted. As Dr James Dobson was branded as saying; “Focus on the Family.”
As this life draws to a close, true prosperity, blessings and wealth will be measured by the family that surrounds you and that you leave behind. This Psalm is about a godly legacy.
