Home Sweet Home: Psalm 126
“1) When the Lord brought back the captive ones of Zion, We were like those who dream. 2) Then our mouth was filled with laughter And our tongue with joyful shouting; Then they said among the nations, “3) The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us; We are glad. 4) Restore our captivity, O Lord, As the streams in the South. 5) Those who sow in tears shall reap with joyful shouting. 6) He who goes to and fro weeping, carrying his bag of seed, Shall indeed come again with a shout of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” Psalms 126:1-6
This Psalm was most likely written during the times of Nehemiah and Ezra marking the return of the Jews from captivity. They had been captive in Babylon for seventy years while Jerusalem lay desolate.
It had been a long and hard captivity, and now they were home in Zion. The walls of the city were still flat and the temple destroyed, but they were home. Many of them saw Jerusalem for the first time. Some had endured the full captivity.
They were celebrating because they were free from captivity. They were celebrating because they were home. They were celebrating because they were sowing their own fields.
In the New Testament, this might be pictured by the return of the prodigal son. There is no place like home! God is the one who sets the captives free. If you are in bondage, this Psalm can become your story.
