Taking Control of Your Emotional Roller Coaster: Psalm 62
“1) My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation. 2) He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be greatly shaken.” Psalms 62:1-2
“5) My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him. 6) He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken. Psalm 62:5-6
If you look at Psalm 62 carefully, verses 1-2 and 5-6 are exactly the same. David was telling his soul to calm down and wait on God! He wasn’t talking to himself per se, he was taking control of his inner emotional roller coaster.
There are times that our emotions become our worse enemy. We need to stand on truth and not feelings. This lesson needs to be learned early in the Christian life.
Watch the next two verses. David forces his soul back to truth about God; “7) On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God. 8) Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”
David then closes this Psalm by reviewing the vanity of people. He observes that people are a poor foundation for truth. Look at how this Psalm closes.
9) Men of low degree are only vanity and men of rank are a lie; In the balances they go up; They are together lighter than breath. 10) Do not trust in oppression And do not vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them. 11) Once God has spoken; Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God; 12) And lovingkindness is Yours, O Lord, For You recompense a man according to his work.” Psalms 62:9-12
At first glance, what David does in this Psalm seems like a futile exercise, but it is absolutely profound. He was forcing his inner self to line up with God and truth and not the roller coaster of emotions.
He was not allowing outward circumstances, human manipulation or his feelings to dictate his spiritual life or state of mind. He was commanding his soul to be silent while he consciously made God his hope, rock and stronghold.
When David’s technique is learned and applied, it is absolutely amazing how quickly peace of mind and tranquility can return. Philippians 4:4-9 might be the New Testament equivalent of Psalm 62.
The bottom line is that your life need not be controlled by racing emotional drama. You can consciously take control of your emotions and your life. God can become your stability and peace of mind.
Notice that the final fruit of the spirit is “self control..” (Galatians 5:23) As a Christian, you can take control of your thoughts, feelings and emotions by becoming mighty in spirit and taking control of your inner self. You can stop the emotional roller coaster and through Gods grace take control of your inner life. You can have peace of mind.
