A Psalm 60 Reset:
“1) O God, You have rejected us. You have broken us; You have been angry; O, restore us. 2) You have made the land quake, You have split it open; Heal its breaches, for it totters. 3) You have made Your people experience hardship; You have given us wine to drink that makes us stagger. 4) You have given a banner to those who fear You, That it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.
10) Have not You Yourself, O God, rejected us? And will You not go forth with our armies, O God? 11) O give us help against the adversary, For deliverance by man is in vain. 12) Through God we shall do valiantly, And it is He who will tread down our adversaries.” Psalms 60:1-4, 10-12
Psalm 60 records an abrupt reset after Israel was defeated in battle. Victory had been coming easy, so David and his army became proud of their own success and took their eyes off from God.
Early in his career, David prayed about every battle and looked to God for new strategy in each engagement. But with each success, David became more self confident and switched into maintenance mode.
He started assuming victory. He stopped urgently seeking God for each battle. He switch into auto pilot. This led to an abrupt wake up call! The army suffered an abrupt defeat.
This Psalm laments the defeat while refocusing on God. In verse eleven, David confesses he had started trusting in his army rather than in God for victory. He quickly repented and returned to seeking God earnestly.
It happens all the time in ministry. The early days of moving forward in prayer and seeking God earnestly for every event gives way to the narcotic of success. That’s when our eyes shift from God to self.
We falsely assume that our fine tuned programs or well trained staff can gain the victory. We get so drunk from our own success that we don’t notice that the presence, glory and blessings of God have departed. The “awe” disappears!
Though at first glance, Psalm 60 appears a bit mundane, it is absolutely profound. To David’s credit, he quickly figured out the root problem and started seeking God with fresh abandonment. It didn’t take long and the presence and blessing of God returned.
Many Christian leaders and churches are dead and dried up without even noticing. They are stuck in maintenance mood. They are satisfied with mediocrity.
Be honest with yourself, are you or your ministry in need of a “Wake Up” call. It often comes in the form of an abrupt defeat or difficult trial that forces you to seek God with new and fresh abandonment. Are you a prime candidate for a Psalm 60 Reset!
