Living Without Finagling: Psalm 57
“1) Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, For my soul takes refuge in You; And in the shadow of Your wings I will take refuge Until destruction passes by. 2) I will cry to God Most High, To God who accomplishes all things for me. 3) He will send from heaven and save me; He reproaches him who tramples upon me. Selah. God will send forth His lovingkindness and His truth. 4) My soul is among lions; I must lie among those who breathe forth fire, Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows And their tongue a sharp sword.” Psalms 57:1-4
We often read these Psalms and forget that they were written by David during real circumstances in his life. Psalm 57 is attributed to 2 Samual 24 when David and his men were hiding in the cave at Engedi and Saul entered to rest in the cool air.
Saul fell asleep unaware that David had occasion to kill him. Some of his men encouraged David to step up and take Saul’s life. In 1 Samuel 24:4, they even quoted a prophecy to encourage David to kill Saul.
Instead, David merely cut off the edge of Saul’s robe. This later proved to vindicate David when he made himself known to Saul.
Psalm 57 proves that trusting in God goes beyond emotions or self justification in doing wrong things. David did what was right and trusted God even when circumstances looked otherwise.
I must confess, this Psalm and its backdrop challenge me. Trusting God without wavering or compromise when your life is in the balance is very hard. Not taking things into our own hands is even harder, especially when everyone and everything says else wise.
David passed this huge test of faith. I have so much to learn from David and what it means to trust God. I have heard it said that “Faith is living without finagling.” This fits that criteria!
