Animosity of the God Haters:
“1) The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God,” They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; 2) There is no one who does good. God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there is anyone who understands, Who seeks after God. 3) Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one. 4) Have the workers of wickedness no knowledge, Who eat up My people as though they ate bread And have not called upon God? 5) There they were in great fear where no fear had been; For God scattered the bones of him who encamped against you; You put them to shame, because God had rejected them. 6) Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores His captive people, Let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be. Psalms 53:1-6
This is a short Psalm that compares two groups of people. In these six short verses, we see the ungodly sons of men compared to the people of God.
The sons of men say there is no God. They are foolish. They are corrupt and commit abominable deeds. There is no good in them. None of them seek after God. They persecute and kill Gods people.
By contrast, Gods people wait on Him. They may be persecuted but not overcome by fear. God works on their behalf. He restores His captive people.
This Psalm has a definite flavor of antisemitism. The Jewish people have always been despised and hated by the world, and yet salvation comes out of Zion. From the historical vantage point of King David, the surrounding nations were untied against Israel.
Today, the same animosity is leveled against both Israel and the followers of Jesus. (See Revelation 12:13-17) David observes in this Psalm that the God haters have an irrational animosity against the people of God.
This has been the case from the time of Cain and Able. It has been the case throughout history. (See Galatians 4:29) this tension will intensify as the end times approach. Welcome to a world made up of two very different kingdoms.
