My Strength and My Shield: Psalm 28:7-8
“7) The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusts in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart exults, And with my song I shall thank Him. 8) The Lord is their strength, And He is a saving defense to His anointed.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭28‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭
I love the Psalms. I spend more time in them than any other portion of Scripture. I wound quite entire chapters, but it wound be to lengthy.
Psalm 28 starts with a prayer to God for help during difficult times, it ends by thanking Him for coming through. God was David’s strength and shield.
His relationship with God is what defined his reign as king. David had failures, but most of His life was defined by his nearness to God. As verse 9 says, during the reign of David, God was a shepherd to His people. Walking close to Him was their strength.
The Psalms can be much deeper for us because God has not changed. He is ever present to be our strength and shield as well. This fellowship and intimate relationship with God that David wrote about can be much deeper and more consistent for us because of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
Take a moment and read 1 John 1:1-7 and see the joy John found in His fellowship with God. Jesus has opened a depth of fellowship with God not known by the Old Testament saints. We can now abide on Him through His indwelling Holy Spirit.
