Prophecy Fulfilled: Luke 23:34-35
“34) But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. 35) And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.”” Luke‬ ‭23‬:‭34‬-‭35‬ ‭
These verses are a direct fulfillment of Psalm twenty two. This is called a Messianic Psalm. Many verses in this Psalm relate directly to the crucifixion. It should be read in its entirety.
Let me quote three verses that were fulfilled in this context in the book of Luke. “16) For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet. 17) I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; 18) They divide my garments among them, And for my clothing they cast lots.” Psalms‬ ‭22‬:‭16‬-‭18‬
And so it happened exactly according to biblical prophecy. They pierced His hands and feet and cast lots for His clothing.
It is important to note that this was done “to Him” and not “by Him.” He was not manipulating these events to fulfill what was written.
When David wrote Psalm 22, crucifixion was an unknown form of death. It was later invented by the Romans. This further highlights the inspiration of Scripture.
Notice, they taunted Him to save Himself. Had He saved Himself, He could not have become the Savior of the world. Had He healed Himself, His stripes could not heal humanity.
A point is often overlooked in the crucifixion. Because Jesus was sinless, He was technically immortal. He did not have a death sentence on His life or body. So what killed Him?
It was humanities sin. He volunteered to become the substitute payment for the sins of humanity. He took on the penalty of death.
It is only with this realization that the full significance of the crucifixion can be realized. Love was written in red on the cross. He laid down His life for us.
