The Inner Voice of The Holy Spirit: Luke 12:11-12
“11) When they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense, or what you are to say; 12) for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”” Luke 12:11-12
These two verses correspond to Matthew 10:16-23. In these verses, Jesus warned his disciples of persecution and hard times before them. He promised they would turn into opportunities to advance the gospel.
He promised that they would not be alone. The Holy Spirit would give them everything to say in their defense. They would be brought before kings and governors as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
Two things stand out in this discourse. First, God’s grace and power shows up at the moment of need when suffering for the gospel. Acts 4:5-31 is a great example. Peter was given extraordinary grace and wisdom to respond and preach the gospel to the Sanhedrin.
Stephen was given the same Holy Spirit anointed fluency in Acts 7 as He preached the gospel to his persecutors. It resulted in his martyrdom, but the seeds of the gospel were sown for the conversion of Saul.
Second, the unction, power and anointing of the Holy Spirit are promised at the moment of witness. Jesus promised that “the Holy Spirit will teach you in that hour what you are to say.”
Though the context refers to times of persecution, Acts 4:29-31 refers to all times of preaching, teaching and sharing the Gospel. This is not an excuse to be slothful with study and preparation of the Word, but it is a promise of the leading and anointing of the Holy Spirit.
I have found this to be true in spontaneous opportunities of witnessing as well. It is difficult to prepare in advance for these occasions, but when you obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit to give a verbal witness, He gives you exactly what you need to share at that moment.
Sometimes it comes in the form of a word of knowledge or word of wisdom for that specific occasion. (See 1 Corinthians 12:7-8) Learn to listen to the inner voice of the Holy Spirit.
Every believer should embrace this promise. Depend on the Holy Spirit to teach and guide you what to say when witnessing or sharing the gospel. This sensitivity to the inner voice of the Holy Spirit becomes easier and easier the more you speak up for Jesus.
