Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit: Luke 12:10
“10) And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him.” Luke‬ ‭12‬:‭10‬ ‭
This verse raises a commonly asked question; “What is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?” There are three potential answers and they might be related.
First, it could be attributing the working of the Holy Spirit to the devil as seen in Luke 11:14-26. This was a common practice of the Pharisees and religious leaders against Jesus. They accused Him of working through the power of Beelzebul. They became calcified in their opposition to Jesus and the gospel.
Second, it could relate to resisting the conviction ministry of the Holy Spirit that leads to openness to the gospel and repentance. (See John 16:7-15.) It should be noted that Stephen leveled this charge against the religious leaders before becoming the first Christian martyr. (See Acts 7:51-53).
Finally, it certainly includes dying in a state of unbelief and rejection of Jesus Christ and the gospel. This is the nail that seals eternal destiny. (Luke 16:26 and Hebrews 9:27). There is no second chance to respond to the gospel after physical death.
These three build on each other. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is a serious heart condition. It leads to eternal death.
Saul is an example of an opponent of Jesus Christ who was gloriously converted and became the Apostle Paul. I do not give up on anyone until physical death seals their eternal destiny.
