Old Testament Basis for Jesus Stepping Into the Priest Of Melchizedek: Hebrews 7:17
“17) For it is attested of Him, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”” Hebrews 7:17
We are now left wondering where this quote comes from? Was the writing of the book of Hebrews making up the notion of this priesthood, or was it promised in the Old Testament?
The answer is actually quite amazing. Psalm 110 talks about the the rule of the Messiah. Parts of this chapter was quoted in Hebrews 1:13. In that context it related to the Son of God.
Psalm 110 is a bold proclamation that the coming Messiah would both rule as a king and have the priesthood of Melchizedek. (See Psalm 110:1-7). This is one of the most prophetic Psalms of David related the glory of the coming Messiah. Though it is short, it is packed with prophetic utterances.
David understood that one of his descendants would be both reign as king and step into the priesthood of Melchizedek. He was looking ahead to the ministry of Jesus Christ.
