Blessed Assurance: Hebrews 10:11-14
“11) Every priest stands daily ministering and offering time after time the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins; 12) but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God, 13) waiting from that time onward until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet. 14) For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” Hebrews‬ ‭10:11-14‬
It has been said that the ultimate expression of insanity is doing the same thing again and again expecting a different result. That is exactly what verse 11 implies about the Old Testament sacrificial system. They offered sacrifice after sacrifice for centuries with the same result; it failed to take away sins.
But the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross was totally different. After His resurrection He sat down at the right hand of God. This signifies that His sacrifice opened the way to the very presence of God. The separation between God and man was gone. He bridged the gap.
But He is also waiting for all of His enemies to be made a foot stool for His feet. According to 1 Corinthians 15:54-57, the last enemy to be destroyed will be death itself. Jesus conquered the grave.
But focus for a moment on Hebrews 10:14; “For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” You and I cannot undo with our sin what Jesus did for us on the cross. If a genuine believer can loose their salvation, then the sacrifice of Jesus Christ can be made void. It can be cancelled. It can be undone.
But our salvation is not based on our goodness or works, it is based on His sacrifice for us. Our sin does not nullify His sacrifice nor weaken His propitiation on our behalf. If our salvation were based on our goodness, we would have no assurance of salvation. But because it is based on His sacrifice we have blessed assurance.
