Angels are Servants of Christ: Hebrews 1:7-9
“7) And of the angels He says, “Who makes His angels winds, And His ministers a flame of fire.” 8) But of the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom. 9) Thou hast loved righteousness and hated lawlessness, Therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy Companions.” Hebrews 1:7-9
As the comparison and contrast continues between Christ and angels, the writer now compares two more texts in the book of Psalms. He starts by quoting Psalm 104:4 and notes that angels were created to be servants and messengers of God. They are subservient to God in every way.
He then turns and quotes Psalm 45:6-7. In this text, the Psalmist calls the Son “God” and points out that He has an eternal throne. He has been given a scepter and He rules. Take time to study both texts from the book of Psalms.
These three verses would undoubtedly stop every Jewish reader in their tracks. They are again confronted with claims of the Deity of Christ from their own sacred writings. These two texts from the book of Psalms present indisputable evidence that the angels are servants of Christ and that Christ is indeed God!
So why does this matter? The writer of the book of Hebrews is systematically presenting the case for Christ from the Old Testament itself. From beginning to end, the book of Hebrews presents the gospel from the Old Testament. For the Jewish student, what unfolds in these thirteen chapters are nothing short of Divine illumination.
