A Perpetual Priesthood: Hebrews 6:19-20
“19) This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, 20) where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”Hebrews 6:19-20
We need to look a bit deeper into these verses. Sometimes a small phrase can carry a big meaning. Keep in mind, the context of the past two chapters is making the case that Jesus has inherited a higher priesthood than that of Aaron.
The high priest according the priesthood of Aaron would enter the Holy of Holies once a year to make atonement for the people. He was also prevented by death from continuing long in his office.
But according to Hebrews 4:14, Jesus passed through the heavens as the Son of God. When He was crucified the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. Because He is eternal, He holds his priesthood perpetually. He is anchored in the Holy of Holies in heaven next to the Father. He is of the priesthood of Melchizedek. Because of this point, He ever lives to make intercession for us.
It might take some time for this comparison to sink in. But Jesus is always on duty in the Holy of Holies in heaven. He doesn’t take 363 days off every year. He doesn’t age, get weary or wear out. His office is perpetual.
So, which priesthood do you want to follow? Every Jewish reader that picked up the book of Hebrews was confronted with this question. As for me and my house, our faith is anchored in Jesus Christ.
