The Downward Spiral of the Proud and Arrogant:
“24) Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention; 25) And you neglected all my counsel And did not want my reproof; 26) I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your dread comes, 27) When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.” Proverbs‬ ‭1‬:‭24‬-‭27‬
We have now arrived at the point where wisdom is personified in the text. It takes on the characteristics of a person. You could attribute this to the Spirit of God in the previous verse. Wisdom laughs at the proud and arrogant.
When reproof is ignored and trampled under foot, the human heart becomes hard and calloused. The consequence is a downward spiral. (Compare to Ephesians 4:17-19)
At the bottom of this spiral are all kinds of consequences. They can come spiritually, physically, relationally, emotionally, legally and financially. People reap what they sow in life.
To those who reject the reproof and correction that wisdom offers, there is a point hardness and callousness that cements human character in wickedness. It is a point from which there is no return apart from the grace and intervention of God.
This is the point at which even God laughs at the foolishness of the human heart. Later, the book of Proverbs characterizes this person as “the fool.”
This position befalls people of every age, gender, nationality, social status and political affiliation. It is impossible to reason with them for they see themselves as a god in their own eyes.
Their fall will consume them like a whirlwind. Distress, calamity and consequence will engulf them because they refuse to humble themselves and surrender to God.
