Learning to Stand Alone for Righteousness.
“10) My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. 11) If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, Let us ambush the innocent without cause; 12) Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, as those who go down to the pit; 13) We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with spoil; 14) Throw in your lot with us, We shall all have one purse,” 15) My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your feet from their path, 16) For their feet run to evil And they hasten to shed blood. 17) Indeed, it is useless to spread the baited net In the sight of any bird; 18) But they lie in wait for their own blood; They ambush their own lives. 19) So are the ways of everyone who gains by violence; It takes away the life of its possessors.” Proverbs 1:10-19
The first major advice in the book of Proverbs is to pick your friendships carefully. Bad friendships can corrupt good morals and lead to a life of ruin. Over the years, I’ve heard many tragic stories of young people running with the wrong crowd.
In one case, a young man was in a car that stopped at a gas station. Little did he know, but the two guys that got out of the car robbed the store and in a confrontation, shot and killed the attendant.
Shortly, they were caught and all in the car were charged with the crime. He had just turned eighteen and spent the next thirty years of his life in prison as an accomplice to the crime. I have heard many such stories over the years .
This scenario is close to the warning of Solomon. It takes courage to have convictions and stand alone. The advice of Solomon is so important; “When sinners entice you, do not consent.”
Notice, he did not say “if” sinners entice you; he said “when” sinners entice you. It’s going to happen. Every young person will be enticed to do wrong.
This section of Proverbs should be mandatory instruction for every young person. Prevention is so much better than rehabilitation.
