Three Postures of Prayer:
I heard a very intriguing message on prayer recently. It talked about three different postures or dimensions of approaching God in prayer. Let me briefly pass on the blessing.
First, we approach Him as Father from the vantage point of a son or daughter. (Luke 11-2-4) In this posture we come before Him in the “Abba Father” mode. (See Mark 14:36, Romans 8:15 and Galatians 4:6) This goes straight to the heart of Father God.
Second, we approach Him from the vantage point of a friend. (Luke 11:5-8) In this relationship we come before Him from a position of trust and favor. (See John 15:16-16) This was the position often used by Moses and David in the Old Testament. God wants to be our friend.
Finally, we approach Him in as an advocate seeking legal protection. (Luke 18:1-8) This story emphasizes the need for legal protection against an opponent or an accuser. According to Revelation 12:10, Satan seeks to accuse us before God both day and night. According to 1 John 2:1-2, Jesus is both our advocate and propitiation.
We need Jesus because His work on the cross cancelled out the certificate of debt against us. (See Colossians 2:13-15) The biblical backdrop to this kind of praying looks more like the scene in a courtroom.
These three insights are having an impact in my prayer life. I had never heard this teaching previously. These three postures of prayer resonate within me.
I am starting to consciously approach God in these three ways according to the need or merit of the occasion. They are deepening my walk with God in the Spirit. I trust they will be a blessing to you.
