Taming the Tongue: Psalm 141
“1) O Lord, I call upon You; hasten to me! Give ear to my voice when I call to You! 2) May my prayer be counted as incense before You; The lifting up of my hands as the evening offering. 3) Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.” Psalms‬ ‭141‬:‭1‬-‭3‬
David understood his own weaknesses. In this short prayer of ten verses He begged God for help in keeping Him righteous. He did not want sin to interrupt his fellowship with God.
In verse two, he yearned for His prayer and worship to be received as incense by God. He wanted to come with clean hands and a pure heart.
His chief request was that God would put a guard over his mouth. He wanted God to keep watch over the door of his lips.
Years later James wrote about the danger of the tongue. (James 3) It is like a deadly poison. It is impossible to tame without Gods help. It directs the course of our lives.
This Psalm is a sober warning about the potential harm and destruction of the tongue. It seems so small but it can set a whole forest on fire. The tongue is set on fire by hell.
Nearly two thousand of years transpired between David and James, and they both recognized the danger of the tongue. It has now been nearly two thousand years since the time of James. Not much has changed.
Do you need God to help you tame your tongue? Praying this Psalm is a good start.
