Entering the Presence of God: Psalm 99
“1) The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble; He is enthroned above the cherubim, let the earth shake! 2) The Lord is great in Zion, And He is exalted above all the peoples. 3) Let them praise Your great and awesome name; Holy is He. 4) The strength of the King loves justice; You have established equity; You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5) Exalt the Lord our God And worship at His footstool; Holy is He. 6) Moses and Aaron were among His priests, And Samuel was among those who called on His name; They called upon the Lord and He answered them.” Psalms‬ ‭99‬:‭1-6‬ ‭
This is an amazing Psalm. It lifts up the glory and holiness of God and it identifies three great intercessors early in Old Testament times. Surely others could have been added to the list.
Here is the point, God has always had intercessors who knew how to pierce His presence and call upon Him. He answered them.
Things have changed. According to Hebrews 4:14-16, Jesus opened wide the access to the throne of grace for all believers. Let me quote those verses:
“14) Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15) For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16) Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4‬:‭14‬-‭16‬
Many other New Testament passages could be added to these verses. I will not labor this point long at this time, but the early believers understood how to enter the presence of God in the Spirit and use the weapon of intercession to demolish strongholds. (See 2 Corinthians 19:3-6)
This is the starting point for the battle for Justice in this present world. It must first be fought before God in the heavenly realm. When He issues the degree, things change quickly on earth.
That is the main thrust of Psalm 99, but the priestly access of the intercessors was greatly expanded by Jesus Christ. He opened access to the One enthroned above the cherubim.
The tragedy is that few Christians have been taught how to come boldly into the presence of God. They have no idea how to invoke God to demolish strongholds on earth.
They need to study Abraham, Samuel, David, Daniel and others from the Old Testament, but then focus on Jesus Christ and the surpassing position, power and favor He has bestowed on us.
Take time to study texts like Ephesians 1:17-23; 3:14-21 and 2 Peter 1:2-11. Step into your position in Christ and become an intercessor.
